According to my perfectly fluent, english speaking girlfriend "Year be penitent" doesn't actually mean anything. Could you please explain?

And by the way, we say 'in the third person' and not 'at' the third person.

Also, it would be more correct to say 'How many times do I have to tell you...'

But apart from that, she totally agrees that I need a good spanking.

From the harraps (Year I know it's a bad dictionnary but anyway...) :

penitent
adj regretful for wrong one has done, and feeling a desire to reform; repentant.
noun
1 a repentant person, especially one doing penance on the instruction of a confessor.
2 RC Church a member of one of various orders devoted to penitential exercises, etc.

I'm pretty surprised that an Irish girl might not be aware of that.

Yep, sorry about that, I've been wondering if I should write these, But my mind is tortured enough to make the bad choices when I have that kind of dilemmas, especially at ten in the morning. Bad habits of a French speaker I guess. I've been hoisted by my own petard ^^ But you're right I should have checked. It's just that it's always frustrating to see that despite of giving grammar lessons to Olivier he is still able to write this kind of unforgivable mistakes.

I'd avoid trying to teach english speakers their own language.

Year I got it, don't be afraid. It's just that I was afraid we were entering an neverending debate and I didn't want the tension to go upward, which happens all the time on the internet, especially with someone that you don't actually know.

I'll try to come up to geneva for a tourney (or else) if I can earn some money by one way or another, I'm actually spending all my money in going London these days so... it could change my mind a little bit.
